COMING SOON: ‘Too Dark for Country EP’ – Anjana Vasan
Folkroom is very proud to announce our first new release in three years – Anjana Vasan’s ‘Too Dark for Country EP’. The record, a debut for singer-songwriter Anjana, is released digitally and on a limited edition CD on October 6th, ahead of an October 7th launch gig at The Slaughtered Lamb. It’s been a while since Folkroom has released a new record via our label, and we want that to speak volumes about just how fantastic ‘Too Dark for Country’ is.
Anjana Vasan has been a part of the Folkroom circle for some years now, and regulars at our gigs will instantly recognise her distinct, unparalleled voice both as a writer and a singer. Drawing on country, blues and folk influences, we don’t think there’s anybody else playing music quite like Anjana’s, and ‘Too Dark for Country’ is a terrific statement to this effect. Over the course of four tracks, Anjana sings of race, the tragic lives of blues legends, love songs that are doomed to repeat themselves and that most magical of all things: key lime pie.
The record, produced by our ever-talented in-house genius Ben Walker, brings sharp focus to Anjana’s writing. At times deep and sorrowful, and yet often sly and witty, it is inescapably the voice of an immense talent, and one we’re proud to be releasing via Folkroom Records. Raised in Singapore, Anjana moved to Britain to work as an actor and has been appearing on stage and screen ever since. Her music was highlighted by the Guardian last year, in a video marking the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death.
The record can be pre-ordered now for £5 on the Folkroom Bandcamp and tickets for the launch can be booked here. The event, at The Slaughtered Lamb in London on October 7th, will see a headline set by Anjana herself, and a support slot from the immensely talented Folkroom alumnus Robin Elliott.
